Emergency Birth Control

Do you, or does someone you know, need a second chance at pregnancy prevention?

Emergency Birth Control (EBC) is a safe and effective second chance at preventing pregnancy AFTER unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.

Emergency Birth Control is a high dose of the same hormones found in regular birth control.  It will NOT cause an abortion or work if you are already pregnant. It will NOT impact your ability to become pregnant in the future.

Emergency Birth Control (like Plan B One Step and Next Choice):

  • Can be effective for up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex. It works best if taken within 3 days (72 hours).
  • Is available at pharmacies, public health clinics, and doctors offices.

*To find out where near you stocks EBC: Check our pharmacy map, or call (503) 223-4510 x.18

  • Is available Over-the-Counter for people 17years and older and with a prescription for those 16 years and younger.

*Pharmacists need to verify your age, so be sure to bring an ID with you.

  • Is covered by the Oregon Health Plan.

Breaking News!

Ella, the newest emergency contraceptive option, has been approved by the FDA, affording women more diverse choices for safe and effective birth control.

Ella provides women with a second chance at unintended pregnancy prevention for up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure, setting Ella apart from the current options which are most effective for only 3 days. While other emergency birth control contraceptives suppress ovulation, thus preventing fertilization, Ella works to prevent implantation.

More options mean that more women can find products that work for their individual situations, breaking down barriers to emergency contraceptive access and potentially reducing the numbers of unintended pregnancies nationwide and right here in Oregon.

The new birth control option will be available at the end of 2010 by prescription only.
